Guidelines for Student Academic Success

A college education, like all learning, should be a challenging and rewarding experience. Learning changes us, enhances our understanding of the world, forces us to make choices and take risks, and provides life-long benefits. Your academic attitude will make the difference. You share responsibility, along with your instructors, for your education. These responsibilities include becoming self-disciplined in your learning. For a successful college experience you will need to:

  • Attend all your classes;

  • Come to class fully prepared and ready to participate;

  • Meet the requirements established by the instructor;

  • Listen, question, and respond in class;

  • You should plan on one to three hours of study time for every hour in class;

  • Avoid last minute cramming;

  • Create a weekly study schedule and study every day;

  • Make academic responsibilities a priority in your life;

Success Strategies
  • Create a weekly study schedule with adequate time for all your courses. A time management sheet will help you accomplish this important task.

  • Talk to your family about the hours you must devote to college study. They may not understand your study schedule unless you discuss with them the demands of your college work.

  • Remember that learning is valuable, and without enough time for study you are cheating yourself of the benefits of an education.

  • One of your primary responsibilities is to come to every class fully prepared and ready to participate. If you are not prepared, your inability to contribute and participate detracts from your learning experience as well as from that of other students.
