Although the Adventure Recreation
and Tourism
program focuses on preparingstudents with outdoor
leadership skills to enter the adventure tourism
industry, many students decide to continue their
education beyond the two-year associates degree
level at a four-year university. As a result,
students can enjoy guaranteed transferability
of their coursework to a number of four-year
universities with whom the Adventure Recreation
and Tourism program has formal articulation
agreements to ensure a smooth transition. Participating
institutions include the University of Maine
at Presque Isle, University of Maine at Machias,
and Unity College.
These agreements make it possible
for students to attend the first two years of
their Baccalaureate degree at WCCC and the second
two years at a university of their choosing.
This option allows students to save thousands
of dollars at the same time giving them an education
that will allow them to succeed in various fields.
This is advantageous particularly to students
who are not entirely sure what profession they
would like to enter, but want to be engaged
in experiences that will allow them to discover
who they are, what their interests are, at the
same time developing leadership skills that
are valuable in every profession.
Leadership Transferrability
Many
of the adventure activities in which students
are engaged throughout the program allow students
to develop leadership skills that prove their
validity whether students are leaders in the
outdoors, in business, or in a board room. Much
of the curriculum allows students to recognize
their leadership potential and encourages students
to apply their learning to their own goals.
For this reason, many students continue on to
become successful not only in recreation related
fields, but also in fields varying from teaching
and education to law enforcement and hospitality
after graduation.
