WCCC STUDENT NAMED 2018 GEORGE J. MITCHELL PEACE SCHOLAR

May 4, 2018

WCCC Student Kari Galdeen will study in Ireland this coming academic year as a 2018 George J. Mitchell Peace Scholar. She is one of two Maine community college students who were selected for their academic and leadership abilities and their commitment to community service and was honored by the MCCS Board of Trustees this spring.

Galdeen, of North Muskegon, Michigan, is enrolled in Washington County Community College’s adventure recreation and tourism program. She will travel to Ireland in spring 2019 to study at Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and plans to concentrate her studies on international tourism and hospitality.

She received a certificate naming her a George J. Mitchell Peace Scholar and a copy of George J. Mitchell’s book The Negotiator. Galdeen will also receive a $1,000 travel stipend from MCCS. As a recipient of the scholarship, she will receive free tuition, room and board and pay no academic fees at the institution in Ireland.

The George J. Mitchell Peace Scholarship was created in 1998 as a tribute to Senator Mitchell for his work in helping to facilitate a peace accord for Ireland and Northern Ireland, and his lifelong devotion and commitment to public service. The Scholarship provides for the exchange of students between public community colleges and universities of Maine and Ireland. Since the exchange was created, 38 students from Maine’s community colleges have travelled to Ireland.
