Senior
College
Our Philosophy
The College for Seniors at Washington County Community College will provide an open,
stimulating learning community for intellectual growth and personal development for
all seniors fifty years of age or older.
Offered through a variety of formats, the courses are taught by talented, volunteer
instructors who are experts in their fields. There are no tests or grades, and no
prior diploma or college education is required.
Program History
WCCCs Senior College was launched in the fall of 2005 by Sue Cassidy, the wife of the
college president, under the Colleges Community Education Division which is overseen by
Assistant Dean, Darin McGaw. The program began with limited resources as the coordination
and instruction was voluntary. With only eight single and multiple session offerings,
the Senior College was established to provide life-long educational experiences for Washington
County seniors fifty years of age or older and ran for six weeks. The spring of 2006 saw the
offerings expand to twenty during an eight-week timeframe. The classes had been on Friday
afternoons, but the fall of 2006 will see the offerings expand yet again to a variety of days
and time formats.
About your Membership
The courses are $5 for each course plus money for supplies if applicable.
The WCCC College for Seniors does not have an official membership program at this time.
We make people aware that if they choose to take courses at other locations, that they would
need to pay the prescribed membership fee which would give them access to other services in
the State network that we do not currently have available.
Volunteer Opportunities
Our courses are taught by volunteer instructors who are experts in their field. We are
constantly looking for people who would be interested in teaching a course or assisting with
the sessions. We do not have a large committee structure at this time, but will be expanding
as we grow in numbers and experience. We encourage anyone who is interested in getting involved
with our Senior College to contact us for more information.
Location of Classes
For the most part, classes are held on the Calais Campus of Washington County
Community College. Classes are being planned at off-campus locations for the fall.
