WCCC Teddy Bear Clinic

April 8, 2015

Calais _ The Early Childhood Education, Education (ECE/E) and Medical Assisting programs collaborated to offer a Teddy Bear Clinic on the campus of Washington County Community College (WCCC) on Monday, March 23.

The event was attended by over fifty children, parents, childcare providers, students and patients. Patients ranged from superman to a bunny, named sweet cheeks!

Children brought their beloved teddy bears and other plush characters to the clinic for a check-up. The Medical Assisting students evaluated the bears by obtaining their vital signs, administering vaccines and assessed their hearing. “This was a great opportunity for the Medical Assisting students to apply the pediatric communication skills learned in the classroom,” explains Medical Assisting Instructor, Cindy Moholland. Linda Levesque, Early Childhood Education Instructor agreed, “The Teddy Bear Clinic was a hands-on opportunity for ECE/E students to practice planning and delivering developmentally appropriate activities for young children.”

The Early Childhood Education and Education students along with the WCCC Librarian, Elizabeth Phillips, coordinated and promoted the event. Participants were welcomed to the campus and read a story and sang a song about visiting the Doctor. Next, the participants went to the Medical Assisting and Phlebotomy Laboratory for their examination. When exams were completed, all were awarded certificates of good health!
